The Urban Camp (hereinafter “we,” “us,” and “our”) is committed to keeping all personal information safe that you share with us on (hereinafter the “Site”).

Generally, you can browse our website without sharing any personal information. However, should you wish to register an account, make a purchase, subscribe to our newsletter, respond to a survey, submit a form, or download information material, etc. you may be asked to voluntarily submit personal information.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect and use the personal information provided by you, how the Site employs cookies, and how we protect your privacy.

What Information We Collect

Personally Identifiable Information

This is information that may be used to identify you as an individual, such as your email address, name, home/work address, or telephone number. We may collect this information in a number of ways on this Site, including, but not limited to, purchase forms, newsletter signup forms, and contact forms.

Non-Personally Identifiable Information

This is information that does not by itself identify you as an individual. We may collect this information in a number of ways on this Site, including, but not limited to, how you use this Site, such as resources browsed, searched and downloaded, the frequency and duration of visits, and your source IP address. This information is collected using Google Analytics and it not tied in any way to your personal information.


Cookies are small bits of information that websites send to your browser. They can be kept in the browser memory for temporary use or stored to a cookies file on your hard drive. The cookie cannot be read by any website other than the one that set the cookie. A cookie can also not read data off your hard disk or read cookie files created by other sites.

We use cookies for a number of administrative purposes. They let us store information that you have already told us, so we don’t have to ask you again. They also allow us to measure what parts of our site visitors prefer to see, and what parts are less popular so we can continuously improve our website.

How We Use Your Information

We may use the information we collect from you when you register for an account, make a purchase, subscribe to our newsletter, respond to a survey, submit a form, or download information material, in the following ways:

  • responding to your emails and requests
  • quickly process your transactions
  • sending reminders and important information regarding your order
  • informing you about related courses, workshops, or camps and services we provide. You have the option to opt-out of receiving any promotional communications as described below.
  • if you are an existing customer, we will only contact you electronically (e.g. email, phone) with information about other courses, workshops, or camps that are similar to those you had previously purchased, if we feel these are relevant.
  • follow up with you after our initial correspondence (email or phone inquiries) if needed.

If you contact us via email, phone or other means, including but not limited to social media, we may keep a record of that correspondence and so may the platform you chose for that communication (e.g. the social media platform itself – which is beyond our control).

Occasionally, we may also ask you to complete surveys that we use for research purposes and customer service, although responding to these surveys is entirely optional.

Who sees your personal information?

In cases where we need to disclose web usage reports to others, your personal information will remain anonymous.

We do not disclose, sell, exchange or trade your personal identifiable information to commercial mailing lists. We will never disclose your personal information without your consent unless it is required under section 8(2) of the Privacy Act. In this case, we will aim to disclose only the specific information that is needed under the circumstances and, wherever possible, will inform you about the disclosure.

Access to personal information within The Urban Camp will be restricted to those staff members and contractors who need the information in order to carry out their job duties. Those employees will maintain the information in the strictest of confidence and will not provide access to the information to anyone who is not authorized. Our staff is granted access to personal information strictly on a need-to-know basis.

All individuals we hire under contract or other means to conduct business on our behalf will be required to respect the provisions outlined in this Privacy Policy as well as the Privacy Act.

How We Protect Your Information

We take information security issues seriously and follow the Government of Canada’s Security Policy. Any personal identifiable information is stored and protected on servers with adequate security measures.

We will protect personal information from loss or theft, unauthorized access, use or disclosure, modification or destruction through appropriate administrative, technical and physical security measures.

These depend on the:

  • sensitivity of the personal information
  • amount, distribution and format of the information
  • method of storage

We will cease all communication and use of personal identifiable information upon your request, however, your access to certain resources on this Site, such as courses, may then be suspended.

Where We Store Your Personal Data

All information you provide to us is stored on secure servers. Any payment transactions will be encrypted and is not stored on our servers.

Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Although we will do our best to protect your personal data, we cannot guarantee the security of your data transmission entirely; any transmission is at your own risk. Once we have received your information, we will use strict procedures and security features to try to prevent unauthorised access.

Our website is hosted in Canada and thus all personal identifiable information that we collect from you via the website’s contract form, for example, is stored and processed within Canada.

However, some data may go through different servers, depending on the interaction. For example, payments are going through a payment gateway that is based in the United States and similarly, our email service providers and analytics platform are based in the United States.

By submitting your personal data, you agree to this storing or processing. We will take all steps reasonably necessary to ensure that your data is treated securely and in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

How do we protect your information?

We use regular Malware Scanning

Our website is scanned on a regular basis for security holes and known vulnerabilities in order to make your visit to our Site as safe as possible and is also behind a firewall for added security.

We use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology.

Your personal information is contained behind secured networks and is only accessible by a limited number of persons who have special access rights to such systems and are required to keep the information confidential. In addition, all sensitive information you supply is encrypted via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. All transactions are processed through a gateway provider and are not stored or processed on our servers.


Wherever possible, we seek a person’s consent before we collect their personal information. Depending on the circumstances and the type of information being requested, consent can be express or implied.

Express consent can be given orally, electronically or in writing. Implied consent may be reasonably inferred from a website action or inaction. When determining the appropriate form of consent, we take into account the sensitivity of the personal information, the reasons we are collecting it, and the reasonable expectations related to the interaction. When your personal information is required for a purpose other than the initial purpose, we will ask for consent again.

We comply with

1) Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)

Canada’s anti-spam legislation (CASL) protects consumers and businesses from the misuse of digital technology, including spam and other electronic threats. When sending electronic messages,

  • we obtain consent,
  • provide identification information, and
  • provide an unsubscribe mechanism.

2) The British Columbia Personal Information Protection Act: PIPA (CANADA)

In British Columbia, Canada, where our organization is registered, the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) applies and regulates the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information in the course of a commercial activity.

To protect your personal information, we adhere to the following principles:

  1. Considering what a reasonable person would consider “appropriate use” of their data’s use
  2. Obtaining appropriate consent
  3. Being responsible for the personal information you have provided us with
  4. Designating an individual to be responsible for ensuring that we comply with this Act and providing their contact details (please see below)
  5. Developing a process to respond to questions or complaints that may arise in this respect
  6. Making information available on request about these Privacy policies and practices

3) The Privacy Information and Electronic Documents Act: PIPEDA (CANADA)

The Privacy Information and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) applies to private-sector organizations across Canada that collect, use or disclose personal information in the course of a commercial activity. This regulation applies in circumstances that are not covered by provincial regulations.

To protect your personal information, we adhere to the following principles:

4) General Law for the Protection of Personal Data (MEXICO)

The General Law for the Protection of Personal Data (Ley General de Protección de datos personales en posesión de sujetos obligados) applies to organizations in the  private sector in Mexico and while The Urban Camp is registered in Canada, we do wish to inform our Mexican customers that we also adhere to the regulations under the above-mentioned Mexican law.

To protect your personal information, we adhere to the following principles:

  • Establishing responsible conditions that will govern the processing of personal data
  • Guaranteeing the rights of access, rectification, erasure, and deletion of personally identifiable data
  • Promoting and fostering a culture of personal data protection within The Urban Camp

5) Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act: COPPA (UNITED STATES)

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is a privacy law in the United States that regulates the collection of personal information from children under the age of 13.

  • Our Privacy Policy specifies what data we collect and how this data will be used. A link to our Privacy Policy is readily accessible via our website’s footer.
  • We operate under the assumption that to register in a workshop, purchase a course, or sign up to our newsletter, children under the age of 13 have obtained permission and/or assistance from their parents to do so.
  • After proper identification, we allow parents to revoke consent for their children, and have the child’s data be deleted from our Site’s database.

Changes To This Statement

We may revise this Privacy Policy from time to time. If there are changes or additions to these terms, we will post those changes here prior to implementing the change. We encourage you to periodically review this Privacy Policy so you are informed on how your information is being protected.

If there are significant changes to this Privacy Policy, we will notify all users, using the personally identifiable information you provided on this Site.
